Vocabulary Instruction

Quizlet

Quizlet allows for online/virtual flashcards for a lot of different subject areas. One of the features that go beyond the two-sided flashcard use is the “Test” option. Students and teachers can design their own tests based on the vocabulary they choose. As a teacher, I like choosing MCQ questions instead of short-answer or essays when it comes to vocabulary. Quizlet connects to UDL because students can choose how they engage the vocabulary.

Reading Rockets

Reading Rockets provides a variety of vocabulary instructional approaches. The website provides teachers with choosing multiple types of exposure to words in different contexts. This can help teachers provide differentiated instruction for students, especially students with SLD in Reading and ELL.

Educaplay

Educaplay emphasizes activating prior knowledge. Students can complete activities online at their own pace or they can participate in group work. The individual setting can help students guide appropriate goal-setting within class/independent/homework.

Factile

Factile allows for teachers to create flashcard games, multiple-choice questions, and memory game features. This can gamify vocabulary for students and increase engagement. This can work for students who struggle to “buy-in” with independent or group work.
